Drum Day 2010

Drum Day 2010 kicked off to a great start with the New Caledonian Field Band sending out early morning wake up calls that would seem like a battle field from way back when to a group of excited and eager Drum Day participants. The New Caledonian Field Band consists of bagpipe players and marching drummers, they march perfectly into special formations while playing and never missing a beat, it is really something to watch if one has never been exposed to something of its nature before. Bear in mind that bagpipes can become extremely loud and give you that getting ready to face your opponent in battle kind of feeling, nothing like something from an older culture performed by award winning modern day members to get you into the swing of things.

After the ringing and overwhelmed feeling from the outstanding Field band, Bevil Spence lead amused youths into a sensational middle earth Drum Circle, which resonated deep within our African pulses and reminded us of our Primal nature, beating a hand drum really connects one to the heritage of our beautifully diverse country and gets those limbs nicely warmed up. With a group of over 20 children beating in time with one another any onlooker would want to pick up a hand drum and join in.

With everyone thinking and feeling like a drummer it was time for our featured clinicians to give aspiring and already playing drummers a little 411 on Drumming basics, perfecting skill, versatility, coping in different drumming environments and tricks of the trade. Jonathan Lombana a popular Myspace drummer presented the first workshop covering Linear Drumming and South American influences and beats. This was greatly received as the ever growing trend of South American music is being used and brought to the public by great local artists today. Barry van Zyl the South African drumming legend followed with a workshop on Poly Rhythms, he spoke briefly on his International Zildjian endorsement which to any drummer working in the industry is an outstanding achievement and also lights the way and starts bringing more interest to our Drummers' skill and professionalism here in South Africa. He also performed songs from Johnny Clegg which I am sure had all who were there tapping away or mouthing the words.

Last but not least, the Finals of the much anticipated Fastest Hands contest took place, with many skilled and disciplined drummers tapping steadily away to a beat measurer to attain the rank of Fastest Hands winner of 2010. If you have not yet witnessed such a contest you will soon see that the drummers who take part in this are serious and have been working at perfecting their skills to tap away at a mesh snare and gain the highest score. The air becomes thick with concentration and with crowds cheering their friends on, you really start to understand that this is more than just a contest between drummers, it is a respect for the art of carrying out each stroke with speed and skill. This year's winners held two familiar faces in the Fastest Hands history. Dean Spangenberg, a feisty force to be reckoned with new comer blasted his way into 3rd place, with last year's 3rd place victor Peter- John Morgenrood shifting up to a mighty 2nd place, leaving room for the Champ and the Fastest Hands winner of 2010, Jason Oosthuizen, who is no stranger to this title and drummer of popular super rock group Van Coke Kartel.

With everyone in high spirits and yearning to be the next Fastest Hands winner, everything returned back to normal after a long and exciting Drum Day, needless to say that next year will only be back with bigger and better sights for the drum community to completely indulge in. Thank you to all who made this special day possible, SA Drums and Percussion, always eager to broaden and grow our local drumming interest and community, the Fastest Hands Participants, the amazing Clinicians for taking the time to show a few things they have learned and help encourage drummers to focus time on their skill and all the guys at Paul Bothner Music for hosting yet another smashing Drum Day.
